Millwall's anger over Cup tickets

Millwall's appeal for an equal share of tickets for the FA Cup Final has been turned down.

The club are furious after the decision to give them 21,400 seats - 6,600 fewer than opponents Manchester United - was confirmed.

They rejected the Football Association's attempts to get them to publicly smooth over the issue last night and feel they have been treated unfairly.

It is not the first time there has been unequal distribution of tickets for the Cup final but the disparity in Cardiff next month will be exaggerated because there will be no neutral areas.

Tickets issued to grass-roots football by the FA will also have to be allocated to fans of either side and United's section will be larger because of the size of their national following.

The split means the Premiership club will have 38,000 fans at the Millennium Stadium while there will be 24,000 backing Millwall.

Millwall issued a statement last weekend pleading with the authorities to treat them fairly. But talks yesterday did not alter their ticket allocation because of logistical problems and South Wales police's fears about violence after trouble involving other clubs at play-off games.

Further bad news for Millwall came when they lost the toss for the hotel they will use to prepare for the game. Dennis Wise's side will stay at the St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay while United will use the Vale of Glamorgan Resort. But Millwall got to pick the lucky north dressing room which has provided the overwhelming majority of football final winners at the stadium.
