Millwall match off after blaze

Leo Spall13 April 2012

Millwall's match against Watford at The Den tonight has been called off because of a fire on a neighbouring industrial estate.

Police sealed off two of the ground's main access roads and decided it would not be safe for the First Division game to go ahead.

The fire started in a car workshop on the Enterprise Industrial Estate, Bolina Road, behind the stadium's North Stand at 1.30pm.

The area was not expected to be reopened until later tonight.

Staff at The Den were able to continue working and nobody was hurt in the fire.

However, the Lions Centre, where Millwall's community scheme is based, had to be evacuated.

Fans have been told that tickets for the game will still be valid when it is played.

A club spokesman said: "We took the advice of the emergency services and called the game off. Fans with tickets will be able to use them for the game when it is rearranged."
