McGhee backing Reid for Ireland

Millwall manager Mark McGhee today predicted a bright international future for his club's Republic of Ireland star Steven Reid.

The 20-year-old midfielder is in the senior team for the first time for his country's friendly against Croatia in Dublin tonight. Yet Ireland and ex-Millwall manager Mick McCarthy only drafted him into the squad after asking McGhee for a recommendation. Now Reid is hoping to establish himself at international level.

McGhee said: "I think once they see him, if they use him the right way, he could be in the squad for a long, long time. He has great attributes as a player and his free-kicks alone are very valuable.

"I was a bit surprised he made the full squad so soon but I think Mick will like him when he sees him up close."

Reid added: " I never expected to make the senior squad this early because I have only played three games for the Under-21s.

"It was amazing in the first training session working with people such as Robbie Keane, Ian Harte and Gary Kelly, who are all Premiership class players."
