McClaren to be unveiled as Twente boss

12 April 2012

Former England manager Steve McClaren will be officially unveiled as the new FC Twente boss at a press conference on Tuesday morning.

The 47-year-old will be presented to the media at the Bistro de Broeierd close to the club's Grolsch Veste Stadium at 10am local time, 9am BST.

McClaren has signed a two-year deal to replace Fred Rutten, who has left the club to take over at Schalke in Germany's Bundesliga.

The Yorkshireman, who left the England job in November following the failure to qualify for Euro 2008, will lead the Enschede side into a Champions League qualifying campaign as he resumes his career in Holland.

McClaren learnt his trade under Jim Smith at Derby and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, where he helped guide the Red Devils to their unprecedented Treble in 1999.

Two years later, he was handed the chance to step out of Ferguson's shadow by Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson.

He spent five years at the Riverside Stadium, winning the Carling Cup in 2004 - the Teessiders' first major trophy - and reaching the UEFA Cup final two seasons later, only to lose to Seville in what was his final game in charge.

Days earlier, he had been appointed as successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson, but failure to qualify for this summer's European Championships ultimately ended his reign.

He has been linked with a series of jobs since, most recently, the position at Blackburn which has been filled by Paul Ince.

However, like Sir Bobby Robson before him, he has opted to further his football education in Holland after being courted for several weeks by Twente president Joop Munsterman.
