Martin dishes out six of the best

14 April 2012

New Zealand pace bowler Chris Martin took six for 54 as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 211 on the first day of the Second Test in Wellington.

But even this total represented a fightback by the Sri Lankans, for whom Thilan Samaraweera top scored with 73.

The Kiwis were 52 without loss in their reply at the close of play.

Martin took the first six wickets, his first scalp being Marvan Atapattu, scorer of a century in the first Test of this two-match series, who went for nought, caught in the slips off the third ball of the day.

Kumar Sangakkara was caught in the gulley for 16 and Mahela Jayawardene fell in the same over. Sanath Jayasuriya was also caught in the slip cordon and Tillakaratne Dilshan gloved a bouncer to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

Samaraweera and Shantha Kalavitigoda survived until lunch but the latter was out soon after, caught by Lou Vincent off Martin for seven.

When left-arm paceman James Franklin got into the act by bowling Chaminda Vaas for five, the Sri Lankans were 86 for seven.

Samaraweera fought back and was 54 not out at tea but he fell leg before to Nathan Astle, who finished the day with three for 35.
