Lewis back for World Cup

12 April 2012

Jon Lewis is confident he has overcome his recent ankle problems and is ready to challenge for a place in England's World Cup side.

The Gloucestershire seamer was named in the 15-man squad for the tournament despite being forced home from the one-day series in Australia with ankle and Achilles problems, only to emerge from several weeks of intense rehabilitation back in England to declare himself fit.

"I was concerned when I left Australia, but it was almost like a back-handed compliment to be sent home and get ready to come out here for the World Cup," he said. "They were obviously thinking of me for this tournament, which was something I was very happy with."

He added: "I had to get myself right and it took a little bit of work and now I feel ready to go."

The squad were facing their first intensive practice session on Sunday at the Arnos Vale ground where they will face Bermuda in Monday's opening warm-up match.

England also face Australia later in the week and will be able to use 13 players in both fixtures.

Lewis and Lancashire seamer James Anderson, who was also forced home from Australia early with back problems, face a battle to force their way into England's line-up for the opening World Cup match against New Zealand in St Lucia on March 16.

In their absence Down Under, Sajid Mahmood and Liam Plunkett bowled impressively and helped England to an unlikely Commonwealth Bank series victory.
