Lewington's lament at Watford

Chris Hatherall13 April 2012

Ray Lewington says he faces a massive job at Watford after watching his team lose 1-0 to Brentford in his first match in charge.

Lewington, who replaced Gianluca Vialli as manager at Vicarage Road last week, suffered a miserable start to his new job when a late Matt Somner goal condemned them to defeat in a friendly at Griffin Park.

"It wasn't a great start," Lewington admitted. "The only thing I learned is that we won't play 4-4-3 again. We've had less than two weeks to prepare for the match and to be honest it showed."

With no money to spend in the transfer market Lewington faces a tough task getting ready for the new season.

He said: "I went in with my eyes wide open and I know there are very tight restrictions. The only people I can take on are Bosman free transfers, and they are limited too.

"The one consolation is that we had probably 11 players out injured who would normally be in the running for a place in the first team."
