Lane shot opens door for Faldo

13 April 2012

Nick Faldo is on course to partner Justin Rose in the World Cup in December after Barry Lane's quadruple-bogey seven at the 16th hole in the final round of the European Masters in Crans-sur-Sierre.

Lane would have finished joint second behind Sweden's Robert Karlsson if he had parred the hole. Instead, he crashed to joint 13th, allowing Faldo - equal 18th - to stay ahead in the race to travel with Rose to Mexico.

Lane's demise came when his tee shot at the 16th got stuck up a tree. Tour referee John Paramor tried to spot the ball through binoculars and then caddie Joey Jones clambered up the trunk to find it.

It was all to no avail, and when Lane went back to the tee he clattered into the tree again and he took four more shots to hole out.

Karlsson dedicated the fifth win of his tour career to his former psychologist Bengt Stern, who died last Friday.

"He has been a very important person in my career," said the 33-year-old, whose quest to fulfil his potential has included a month-long fast and body psychotherapy sessions.

Meanwhile, Spain's Sergio Garcia won the Korean Open in Seoul with a record 23-under total of 265.
