Lampard backs 'killer' Becks

Frank Lampard has hailed David Beckham's England return and described him as the "best set-piece taker in the world" ahead of Wednesday's crunch Euro 2008 qualifier with Estonia in Tallinn.

Beckham ended an 11-month exile from international duty with a fine display for Steve McClaren's side during Friday's 1-1 draw with Brazil at the new Wembley as he set up John Terry's opening goal with a pinpoint free-kick.

Lampard said: "Beckham did very well against Brazil. It is how he has been playing for his club and how we all know David Beckham can play. He has always got that killer ball he can put into the danger area from free-kicks which can make a goal."

He added: "There was also a nice balance. It looked good across the midfield and I think David gives us that. He is very disciplined on the right and was supplying good balls from the right-hand side. It is nice to play in a team with players of quality that can deliver a ball like he did for the goal.

"He is the best set-piece taker in the world. Simple as that. He can deliver them for Real Madrid and England time and time again. That's what he can do. When he puts balls in like that, and you've got people like John Terry, it is going to produce goals."

While Beckham was given a hero's welcome at Wembley, Lampard was the target of the boo boys and, although he can cope with that, he points out it does not help England's cause.

He said: "Having the boos aimed at you is part of playing for England, I suppose. A year ago I had just won the fans' Player Of The Year award for the second time on the spin but that's how English football is.

"I've got no problem with it. I remember when people wanted David Beckham out of the England team and he got a hero's welcome against Brazil because he is a great pro and he keeps working hard.

"This happens in football. It is not helpful to the team and not helpful to the players - but I am certainly big enough to take that on the chin.

"I know in the World Cup last summer people were expecting me to score a few goals and it just didn't happen, but rest assured I'm fighting to get that knack back and to knock the goals in again."
