Lambeth enterprise sees them conquer Hill

Lyndon Daniels spends his working week as a coach driver, but his new weekend pastime is knocking over giants.

Daniels is captain of Lambeth Enterprise, the team who have taken club cricket's richest knockout tournament, the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy, by storm. The team, from the lower regions of the Kookaburra Surrey League, pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the £12,000 event's 10-year history by beating Middlesex League side Winchmore Hill by 51 runs in the quarter-finals. They will now travel to Wanstead in the semi-finals on Sunday 19 August. In the other last-four clash, Bexley will play host to Saffron Walden.

With the final four featuring two teams from Essex and one each from Kent and Surrey, it means that for the first time, the competition's semi-finals are a Middlesex-free zone. Tournament director David Willis said: "This is proving to be a thin year for Middlesex, but it can only be good for the tournament.

"There will be a new name on the trophy next month."

Lambeth had already disposed of Harrow, Spencer and Beaconsfield before they saw off mighty Winchmore Hill. Wicketkeeper Howard Chambers top scored with 54 as Lambeth were all out for 183 from their 50 overs. They then restricted Hill to 132 to win by 51 runs.

Daniels admitted: "One more victory and we're at The Oval, but we mustn't start thinking about that.

"It's just great to put the club on the map and make people realise what ability there is in the side."
