Jones winning fitness race

12 April 2012

Stephen Jones was optimistic he would be able to lead Wales out against Canada at the Millennium Stadium on Friday night.

The outside-half was due to take part in his first training session with the Welsh squad on Monday afternoon since straining medial knee ligaments in the 29-29 draw against Australia 10 days ago.

He sat out Wales's 38-20 victory over the Pacific Islanders at the weekend, but is now confident he will be ready for Canada, and, more importantly, in-form New Zealand on November 25. "The physio (Mark Davies) has given me the all clear to train this afternoon (Monday), so I've got to be optimistic," said Jones.

Jones added: "You trust in the medical staff and as far as I'm concerned it's not one of those injuries that you can do more damage to or is likely to go again.

"I'm really, really happy because last week after the Australia game I was struggling to walk, but it settled down really quickly and responded to treatment."

Jones said he was impressed with Wales's display against the Islanders which saw them run out winners by five tries to three.

"I thought we did well at the weekend, considering we, like the Islanders, had not played as a team before.

"I thought we were very organised and I thought our defence was very efficient.

"Yes, we have got certain things we would like to work on and improve on. But it's great to be able to do that when we are playing some good and winning rugby.

"Canada has always been a difficult game for Wales. They are very physical and very committed. It is their first game on tour and they will be ready to go and prove a point."
