Jessica Ennis-Hill could be reallocated her World Championships gold medal in front of a home crowd at London 2017.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday ruled Tatyana Chernova must forfeit her world title from Daegu in 2011 following an additional backdated suspension to her previous doping ban.

Although the Russian, who edged Ennis-Hill into the silver at the event five years ago, has 45 days to appeal, it is thought to be unlikely.

Chernova had already been stripped of two years of results up to 14 August 2011 but the Court of Arbitration for Sport imposed an additional ban, saying, “All results between 15 August 2011 and 22 July 2013 are annulled and the athlete will forfeit any titles, awards, medals, points and prize and appearance money obtained during this period.”

In due course, a Daegu gold medal will be sent to governing body UK Athletics, who are responsible for reallocating the medal to Ennis-Hill.

UKA have said they could use London 2017 platform for that but, as the event is run by the IAAF, it would need to be sanctioned by athletics’ global governing body.

But this morning, a spokesman for the IAAF said: “Anything like that is possible and it would be up to the member federation to decide. They will liaise with us but the whole point with this is to make sure that clean athletes get their moment in the spotlight. It sends a good message and I can’t see that remotely being blocked by us.”
