Hosts try to tame Windies

England put the brakes on the West Indies after they had been given a flying start by skipper Chris Gayle in the second NatWest Series one-day international at Edgbaston.

Paul Collingwood won his first toss since replacing Michael Vaughan as one-day skipper and he had no hesitation in asking the West Indies to bat on an overcast morning.

And he would have been reasonably content at the halfway stage with the Windies on 104 for two.

James Anderson began with a maiden to Gayle but Ryan Sidebottom's first delivery flew down the leg-side past the despairing dive of Matthew Prior for five wides.

Gayle was particularly aggressive and he smacked Anderson over extra cover for six and then hammered the Lancashire paceman through the covers for four.

Anderson made the first breakthrough when Devon Smith had made 17 from 21 balls as he bottom edged a catch through to Prior.

Sidebottom returned for a second spell in place of Anderson, whose six overs cost 22 runs, and Gayle picked up his third six over long-off.

But it was his last scoring shot and after making 36 out of 67 he checked his shot against the Nottinghamshire bowler and was caught by Anderson at mid-on.

Collingwood opted to use the second powerplay and the scoring virtually dried up with only eight runs added between the 15th and 20th overs when the score stood on 84 for two.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul needed 21 deliveries to register his first boundary and that came from an unconvincing edge off Sidebottom which flew wide of Prior.
