Holloway clamps down on triallists

13 April 2012

Queens Park Rangers manager Ian Holloway has vowed to make all triallists pay their own way after French defender Aziz Ben Askar bought his own plane ticket to London and made an instant impact with the cash-strapped Second Division club.

Ben Askar, 26, was outstanding on his debut for Rangers on Saturday, even clearing off the line in the dying minutes to preserve his side's 1-0 lead over Stoke.

Holloway believes it proves you don't have to pay big signing-on fees to snap up quality players. He said: "In the past we've spent big money on players who thought they were better than really are. But those days are gone.

"These days even triallists have to pay their own way. Agents don't like it but it's the way we work.

"Aziz shows the right attitude. He paid his own accommodation and his own ticket over to have a trial. I'll be continuing that in the future regardless of whether we come out of administration."
