Hoddle looks to rest Sheringham

Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle is considering resting a trio of stars for the visit of Third Division Torquay United in the Worthington Cup tonight.

Hoddle will give skipper Teddy Sheringham, midfielder Darren Anderton and centre-half Goran Bunjevcevic the chance to recover from their niggling injuries in time for Sunday's home game against Chelsea.

That would mean a recall for Ukrainian international Sergei Rebrov, who has been on the bench for two games since collecting a facial injury against Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

Chris Perry could also return and Les Ferdinand will resume the role of captain.

Torquay goalkeeper Kevin Dearden is due to make his first senior appearance at White Hart Lane - 10 years later than he would have hoped.

Dearden, 31, began his professional career as a Tottenham trainee and spent five seasons there.

He then joined Brentford, where he was a regular for five years before signing for Wrexham.

But during his time with Spurs, Dearden made only two first-team appearances - at Hartlepool in the League Cup and as a substitute in a First Division game at Nottingham Forest alongside Anderton and Sheringham.

Meanwhile, Anderton has scoffed at suggestions that his troublesome Achilles injury is causing him severe problems.

Anderton claims he returned to America during the club's two-week Premiership lay-off only for a check-up.

Anderton said: "The truth is that I went for a check-up because it was a convenient time for everyone.

"I'd been playing for a few weeks and I admit that a combination of hard training and pitches left the Achilles feeling a bit sore.

"The specialist found a bit of inflammation, but it's nothing to warrant any real concern. It's just a case of being careful.

"I feel it would be better to see the specialist who performed the original procedure - that's procedure, not operation - rather than someone else.

"That way, I am following a consistent course of therapy. This is actually the best I've felt in a long time."
