Graham not in Villa frame

Ken Dyer13 April 2012

Aston Villa, who are looking for a new manager in the wake of John Gregory's shock resignation, are unlikely to turn to George Graham.

The former Arsenal, Leeds and Tottenham manager was today installed as one of the favourites to succeed Gregory, who resigned yesterday after four years in charge, but it is understood that the Villa hierarchy would prefer a younger man.

Coaches John Deehan and Stuart Gray will take temporary charge while the Premiership club draw up a shortlist of candidates.

The list could include Charlton manager Alan Curbishley who, together with his No 2 Mervyn Day, was a player at the Midlands club.

However, it would take a lot for Curbishley to be persuaded to leave Charlton, a club who have grown out of all recognition since he was put in sole charge in 1995.

Gregory's decision to quit came out of the blue, less than four days after his side beat Charlton 2-1 at The Valley. He has been linked with the vacant job at Derby.

The former QPR player has had an uneasy relationship with chairman Doug Ellis for some time and obviously felt enough was enough.
