Givens has high hopes for Randolph

12 April 2012

Don Givens believes Darren Randolph can be the next great Irish goalkeeper - but is worried he may lose the Charlton player for Tuesday's Under-21 European Championship clash with England.

Randolph, 20, was in inspirational form as Ireland beat Sweden 3-2 in a thrilling friendly encounter in Uppsala on Friday night, but the Wicklow-born keeper suffered a chest injury in the clash and is a doubt for the Turner's Cross clash with England.

"Darren suffered a knock and is struggling with a crack on the chest. He'll be x-rayed in Cork when we arrive there later on Saturday," said Givens. "I feel he has the potential to be the best Irish goalkeeper we've seen in years. He just needs to get a break at Charlton and hold down that spot."

He added: "He is very laid back and takes everything in his stride. We'd have been 4-1 down at half-time if he hadn't been at his best against Sweden.

"The Swedes probably would have been choked to create that many chances and not scored but Darren was very impressive."
