Giants hit summit

Huddersfield went on a nine-try scoring spree against struggling Salford to ensure they finished the Easter programme as they began it by topping the Engage Super League following this 52-22 rout.

Prolific half-back Danny Brough led the rout by kicking seven goals to reach 2,000 career points as the Giants, watched by their lowest crowd of the season - just 6,042 - bounced back from their shock Good Friday defeat.

Reds captain and scrum-half Daniel Holdsworth looked a class apart and it was his pinpoint pass that got second rower Adam Sidlow charging over for the game's first try after eight minutes and he then produced inch-perfect kicks to set up touchdowns for himself and winger Mark Henry.

The Giants' more direct approach paid dividends with loose forward Luke O'Donnell and hooker Shaun Lunt both scoring tries from close range and the home side looked to have established a grip on the game with two further tries in a seven-minute spell.

First second-rower Jamie Cording marked his full debut by supporting a break by left winger David Hodgson to score his first try for the club and then second rower Dale Ferguson went over after right winger Jermaine McGillvary had collected Brough's high kick.

Henry's try had brought the visitors back to within six points at 24-18 by the break but it was virtually all Huddersfield in the second half, with skipper Kevin Brown pulling the strings to great effect.

The powerful Ferguson charged over his second try five minutes into the second half and, after he was held up short going for his hat-trick 10 minutes later, Lunt made the most of the position by going over from dummy half for his second try.

When impressive prop Darrell Griffin proved unstoppable from 10 metres out on the hour, it meant that all seven of Huddersfield's tries had come from their forwards, which was a fair reflection of the contest.

Brown ended the forwards' monopoly when he jinked his way over for a deserved solo try on 66 minutes and his half-back partner Brough took his goal tally to seven from eight attempts before taking a well-earned rest.

Salford grabbed a consolation try through centre Stefan Ratchford, who took advantage of a rare defensive error by full-back Scott Grix, but Huddersfield had the final say when leading tryscorer McGillvary struck for his ninth touchdown of the season five minutes from the end and Grix added the goal.
