GB look handy performers

Great Britain's women's handball team have qualified for the group stage of the 2012 European Championships.

Two victories over Finland in a pre-group qualifier at the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre at the weekend sealed their spot.

Two years ago Britain reached the same stage but finished bottom of their group and they know they face a daunting challenge this time round.

Only the top two will progress to the finals in Holland in December and Britain must overcome Montenegro, Poland and Russia.

Head coach Jesper Holmris said: "Russia and Montenegro are two of the top teams in the world. It's a tough group but it's just a great chance for us to play those teams."

Against Finland, Kathryn Fudge top scored with six goals as Britain won 31-22, while Kelsi Fairbrother and Lynn McCafferty each scored seven in the 27-20 win the following night.

Sir Clive Woodward, the British Olympic Association's elite performance director, was among the onlookers and said: "I thought that it was fantastic. The athleticism and physicality was very impressive and it was a great game to watch."
