Foster breaks British record at 38

12 April 2012

Mark Foster rose to ninth in the world rankings after becoming the first British man to dip under 22 seconds and wresting back his British record in the 50 metres freestyle at the Golden Bear meet in Zagreb.

The 38-year-old, who will compete in his fifth Olympics in Beijing this summer, clocked 21.96secs at the competition in Croatia to retrieve his record from Simon Burnett in the process.

The six-time world short-course champion's previous best time had been 22.13, set in 2001.

Breaking the 22-second barrier launches Foster into the world's top 10 after a year which has seen the world record traded between Eamon Sullivan and Alain Bernard with the former the current holder with a time of 21.28.
