Ford interested in England coaching job

12 April 2012

Kent director of cricket Graham Ford, considered by many to be the favourite to succeed Peter Moores as England coach, has confirmed his interest in the job.

The positions of Moores and captain Kevin Pietersen are under intense scrutiny after a public breakdown in communications between the pair and Ford, who coached a young Pietersen in South Africa before he moved to England, would be interested in becoming the coach should the position become available.

"I would certainly consider it," he told The Times. "I have been within the system with Kent for the past four years and I feel part of it so, yes, it is something that would interest me."

He added: "I am sure the hierarchy at the ECB are trying to sort things out positively and broker some sort of peace deal between Kevin and Peter."

Reports on Wednesday morning claim both Moores and Pietersen could be sacked from their positions after the England and Wales Cricket Board convened for an emergency meeting on Tuesday night.

A second meeting is reportedly scheduled, with the ECB keen to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Should Pietersen remain in his job, Ford believes the pair's history makes him the ideal candidate to deal with the skipper.

"I would like to think I could deal with Kevin and work with him," he said.

"I did when he was a young fellow. He knows what I am about. I like to think it is a partnership that would work.

"We do have contact. On and off, when he is playing, he sends text messages. Probably the last time we spoke was when he was looking for information about some of the South African players during the series last summer.

"That is one of the exciting things about his captaincy -- straight away he was very quick to source as much information as he could. I know he also chatted to Shaun Pollock and Dale Benkenstein."
