Gianluca Rocchi has been named as the referee for the biggest group game of the World Cup so far.

Real Madrid team-mates Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos will both lead out their respective nations when Portugal face Spain at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi, two days after Julen Lopetegui's dismissal and Fernando Hierro's appointment as the new Spanish national team coach.

He has been involved in qualifying for the last two European Championships, but this game is the Italian’s first at a major international tournament.

Rocchi will be familiar with the use of VAR having used the technology in domestic games this season, with the first big decision yet to be made by the video assistants.

The 44-year-old has been the man in the middle for clubs such as Spurs, Manchester United and Real Madrid in the Champions League this season.
