England to face Sweden in World Cup quarter-finals after beating Colombia in last 16

England will face Sweden in the World Cup quarter-finals after beating Colombia in Tuesday's last-16 tie at Spartak Stadium.

A fiery affair at Spartak Stadium, which included seven yellow cards, looked to be settled in normal time thanks to Harry Kane's 57th-minute penalty, only for Yerry Mina to head home his third goal of the corner in the 93rd minute.

A tense 30 minutes of extra time followed which saw few chances fall for either team until the lottery of a penalty shootout was confirmed.

England had never won a World Cup penalty shootout going into the game and looked to be on the brink when David Ospina saved Jordan Henderson's penalty. However, Matheus Uribe hit the bar and Carlos Bacca was denied by Jordan Pickford to allow Eric Dier to win it.

The win is the Three Lions first in a tournament knockout fixture for 12 years following a bleak run which dates back to the 2006 World Cup.

David Beckham’s free-kick secured a 1-0 win over Ecuador as England progressed to the quarter-finals, but defeats to Portugal, Germany, Italy and Iceland have followed at major tournaments since.

Now England have progressed, they face a battle with Sweden for a place in the semi-finals.

England's last tournament meeting with Sweden came at Euro 2012, when the Three Lions won the group encounter 3-2 thanks to goals from Andy Carroll, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.
