Danny Murphy: England can reach latter stages of World Cup with Harry Kane on best form

Harry Kane will embrace the England captaincy — and if he is at it in Russia, then we have got a hell of a chance of getting to the latter stages.

All the big teams at this World Cup have big players. Look at Eden Hazard, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. And Harry is ours. He is a wonderful talent and he can take us deep into the tournament, he is that good. He is a special player with a desperate desire to do well.

It is a big tournament for him but he has just got to keep doing what he does for Tottenham. Harry will not concern himself too much with the captaincy side of things.

I do not see it as a problem for him — and that is probably why Gareth Southgate gave him the armband. Harry has a strong mentality and is a workaholic.

Another player who can have a big impact in Russia is Jesse Lingard. He has turned into a big-game player , which is why Jose Mourinho started him in nearly all United’s important games throughout the season. That is a real compliment to him, with the attacking talent they have got in their squad. It tells you he must be doing something right.

Lingard mixes his game up really well and his end product has got better. One of the biggest things is that he scores goals in big games.

He is never fazed and the game is never too much for him, which is massive going into a World Cup, where the pressure is so high.

His running off the ball is great. Dele Alli is good at that as well and they give Southgate excellent attacking options. The fact Alli plays with Kane at club level as well means England will be even more dangerous going forward.
