Hull City's battle to avoid Championship relegation could not be going much worse, with Grant McCann's side having trailed 7-0 against Wigan Athletic... at half-time!

The Tigers went into Tuesday evening's contest sitting 22nd in the second tier and one point adrift of safety following a run of three consecutive defeats.

And morale appeared to hit the floor as they were utterly outclassed in the first 45 minutes at DW Stadium by a Wigan team that have shown terrific form either side of lockdown as they also fight to avoid the drop with a 12-point deduction looming for entering administration.

Wigan were in front inside the first minute on home soil thanks to Scottish winger Kal Naismith, with the score remaining 1-0 to the hosts until a complete and utter collapse from Hull transpired in the final 18 minutes of a truly wretched opening period.

Striker Kieffer Moore and Everton loanee Kieran Dowell helped themselves to a brace apiece, while further efforts from Jamal Lowe and Joe Williams completed the first-half embarrassment for the visitors.

Dowell completed his hat-trick after the break and Hull had a penalty decision overturned as Wigan eventually won 8-0 - the biggest league triumph in the club's history and their eighth victory in 11 matches.

That run also includes 10 clean sheets. For Hull, the defeat was their worst in the league since 1911.

According to Opta, Wigan - who famously lost 9-1 to Tottenham in the Premier League back in 2009 - had never before scored eight or more goals in a single league match and are the first to notch seven in one half in England's top four divisions since Watford bounced back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to win 7-2 against Blackpool at Vicarage Road in a Championship clash in January 2015.

Paul Cook's Wigan have showed remarkable spirit in the face of adversity after being placed into administration last month and have launched an appeal against their 12-point deduction.

The EFL previously indicated that the deduction would only apply this season if Wigan finish outside the bottom three in the Championship.

Tuesday's thumping victory saw the Latics move up to 13th and 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
