West Ham have launched bids for “several strikers” in an urgent attempt to fill the hole caused by Andy Carroll’s long-term ankle injury.

Stoke’s Peter Crouch and Portugal international Hugo Almeida are two of Sam Allardyce’s principal targets.

“We intend to sign one more player, hopefully before the start of the season,” a West Ham spokesman said today. “We have bids in for several strikers.”

West Ham’s striker search has become more acute with £12million summer signing Enner Valencia unlikely to be fit for their Premier League opener at home against Tottenham.

Ecuador international Valencia has just begun an intensive rehabilitation programme following an ankle problem.

One player back with the squad is Ravel Morrison, who is expected to continue his treatment programme after a recent groin operation.
