Welling United player-manager Jamie Day has suggested the financial benefits of victory over League Two side Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the FA Cup could support the club for the next three years.

Conference side Welling travel to Plymouth on Saturday as they bid to upset the odds and progress to the third round at the expense of their hosts, who were playing Championship football little more than three years ago.

And Day believes the magnitude of their task is evident from the rewards that would come with victory.

“I think for someone our size, it’s a big game,” the 34-year-old said.

“The benefits we could get as a result of going through could set us up for next two or three years, so it is a massive game for the club.”

The Kent club, who edged past Luton 2-1 in the first round, currently lie in 13 position in the Conference National and 16 points off leaders Cambridge.

Day admits the comfort of mid-table security has afforded his side the luxury of focusing on a cup run and believes his club have a fighting chance on Saturday.

“I feel we’re side-tracked at the moment with the FA Cup after beating Luton,” said.

“I think we have a reasonable amount of points [29] so it’s okay for us to concentrate on the FA Cup.

“Of course, they’re expected to win, but because of their size they will have a bit more pressure on them than us.

“We can use that to our advantage, and, with a bit of luck and a good performance, we can fight them all the way.”

Welling played in front of an average attendance of 615 last term and include striker Ross Lafayette, Digital Account Manager at the Evening Standard and the Independent in their ranks.
