Wayne Rooney today revealed he has already received offers to manage in England and America.

The former England captain is 12 months into a two-and-a-half-year contract with Major League Soccer side DC United, having scored 23 goals in his 40 appearances to date.

Rooney’s fine form was underlined earlier this week with a stunning goal from inside his own half – the third such effort of his career – against Orlando City, securing a 1-0 victory which takes United level on points with second-placed Montreal Impact and just two adrift of Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia.

The striker turns 34 in October but already has one eye on a career in the dugout and when asked whether clubs had been in touch to offer him managerial positions from this country or in the United States, Rooney said: “Yeah, both.

"There’s an opportunity for me to go into management straight away and when I do hang my boots up, that decision will be made on what the ambition of the club is first of all, and what my ambitions are and what's right for both myself and that particular team.

“I'm taking the steps to get my badges completed and when I finish playing I'll see what opportunities come up. There's already offers which have been made, but at the minute I'm still a player and I want to enjoy playing, and then I'll see which offers are right when I do finish.”

Rooney is keen to follow in the footsteps of Frank Lampard, who looks set to be appointed Chelsea boss just a year after going into management with Derby.

The 41-year-old is set for talks with owner Roman Abramovich in the coming days with an announcement expected soon afterwards.

It would signify the biggest step yet for the cluster of Rooney’s former international team-mates who have hung up their boots, with Steven Gerrard in charge at Rangers, John Terry coaching at Aston Villa and Scott Parker recently named permanent manager of Fulham.

"I think it's brilliant for Frank, but also for any young English players, or players who've just finished playing, to see big teams like Chelsea giving Frank an opportunity to prove himself," Rooney added.

"I'm sure at some stage over the next few years Steven (Gerrard) will get that opportunity at Liverpool.

"Scott Parker, John Terry at Aston Villa - it's great for myself, who wants to go into management, to see these lads getting opportunities and it gives you hope that it will happen for you."
