Laser shone on Manchester United's Wayne Rooney before penalty miss in Capital One Cup defeat

Cup exit: Rooney missed United's penalty after a laser light was shone on his face

Wayne Rooney had to contend with a laser from the stands before he missed a penalty as Middlesbrough delivered the latest in a string of fourth-round shocks to eliminate Manchester United on Wednesday.

Aitor Karanka's men will face Everton at the Riverside Stadium in the next round after a 3-1 shootout victory brought an exciting climax to an otherwise tedious encounter.

Championship promotion-chasers Boro had a goal disallowed in normal time when Kike hit the post and Daley Blind put the rebound in his own net, with an offside flag curtailing their celebrations.

Stewart Downing also forced a stunning save from Sergio Romero while Jesse Lingard hit a post for United but the 90 minutes finished goalless.

Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time with Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini missing close-range headers at the death for United.

Rooney and Ashley Young saw shootout penalties saved by Tomas Mejias, while Michael Carrick blazed over, but the United captain had a laser beamed onto his face as he prepared to take his spot-kick.

It was not immediately clear from which area of the ground the laser was shone.
