Watford in talks with Tottenham over sharing Adebayor's £100,000 wages to take striker until the summer

Wage split: Watford could take on up to 50 per cent of Adebayor's £100,000 wages

Watford have started negotiations with Tottenham over the possibility of signing Emmanuel Adebayor next month.

While Spurs released the 31-year-old from their squad in September, they are still paying him the £100,000 a week owed on his contract.

The striker’s deal at White Hart Lane expires at the end of the season and the north London club are hoping he will move elsewhere in January to get him off the wage bill.

Adebayor is looking to return to the game in the new year and Watford confirmed their interest last month.

Watford won’t pay Adebayor’s wages in full but are talking to Spurs over paying a percentage, believed to be no more than 50 per cent. Spurs would prefer if he moves to a side that will agree to meeting the sum in full and Chelsea, West Ham, Aston Villa and Galatasaray have all been linked with his signature.

Watford’s interest is still at an early stage and his arrival at Vicarage Road is rated as only 50-50.

Quique Sanchez Flores’s side currently sit seventh in the Premier League, with strikers Troy Deeney and Odion Igahlo sharing 15 goals between them. Flores is worried about one of them getting an injury, though, which is why Adebayor has been discussed, although the acquisition of Roma’s Juan Iturbe, initially on loan, is the priority.
