Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed his intention to recruit a world class midfielder before the start of the season.

The Manchester United manager has put his faith in executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to secure his remaining transfer targets while the club tour Australia and the Far East.

And a player in the mould of Old Trafford great Bryan Robson is high on his wanted list.

After completing deals for Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Solskjaer wants to secure the signing of Harry Maguire and, ideally, two midfielders.

Man Utd have been stunned by Newcastle’s £50million valuation of Sean Longstaff , who is seen as a player to be developed at Old Trafford. And Solskjaer also wants to bring in a midfielder who can make an immediate impact in an area of his squad which is in desperate need of address.

The Norwegian said: “I never had the honour of playing with Robbo, but we need a player like him in the team.

“We need to win again. We are on the way to building a new squad. We've got new staff in, coaching staff. I believe so much in this club and this project.”

Solskjaer accepts time is running out to complete his squad overhaul, but remains confident Woodward would deliver the targets on his wanted list after remaining behind in the UK for the first leg of United’s tour.

“Timing is obviously an issue, but we're working, as I’ve said before - of course we're optimistic,” he said.

Solskjaer has set his sights on building his squad around emerging domestic talent and is convinced that approach is the best way to return United to the summit of English football.

“We're waiting for the young ones to come through because we've got so many exciting players and I'm sure we'll see the best of them in the years to come,” he said. “There are some experienced ones as well that still have a few years left in them. We can get back to the level we were, definitely.

“It's such an honour (to manage United) but it is also a great responsibility. I'm following some great managers. Sir Alex (Ferguson) was the best and I'm trying to take the best from him and put my own personality on the job. “We've got such a big fan-base and such a history that I feel that it is a fantastic opportunity for me.

“I come in at 7am thinking I'm the first one and Michael (Carrick) and Kieran (McKenna) are already there planning the sessions. I know this club is going places because of the people we have here.”

Solskjaer also revealed the task he faced when trying to lift spirits after Jose Mourinho’s toxic reign.

“I saw many things that we tried to improve on,” he added. “The players had the quality, but I felt the confidence wasn't the highest.

“They had just lost to Liverpool with a bad performance. We just tried to tell them how good they are, how important a position they have in the club's history and that they were signed because they are all quality players.

“No one signs for Man United without having quality.”
