Christian Eriksen has backed Dele Alli to shine for England after his Tottenham team-mate earned a first senior call-up.

Alli has been one of the surprise stars of the early season for Spurs and has caught the eye of Roy Hodgson, who could give him a debut against Estonia tonight or in England’s final Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on Monday.

Asked whether Alli, 19, would succeed at international level, Eriksen said: “Definitely. He has shown what he is capable of in the last few games and he is one of the young lads coming through. We are all really happy for him.”

Eriksen’s words were echoed by Eric Dier, Alli’s central midfield partner at Spurs who is also believed to be close to full England selection.

The pairing between Dier, 21, and Alli is one of the youngest in recent times for Spurs but the early results are encouraging for head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Dier said: “He is a very exciting young footballer. Hopefully he can enjoy it with England.”
