The defender was taken off during the first half of the 0-0 draw after suffering a similar problem to the one he picked up in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City on January 21, which kept him out of the FA Cup win over Wycombe seven days later.

Rose now looks doubtful for Spurs’ meeting with Middlesbrough at White Hart Lane on Saturday. There are fears he has done a degree of damage to the medial ligament, which could mean up to four weeks out of action.

Ben Davies, who replaced Rose at Sunderland, is expected to come in on Saturday and said: “Of course, this is something you have to be ready for.

"We don’t know how bad Danny’s injury is but if it is my chance to play, then I have to do the best I can.”

Rose’s absence would be a huge blow for Tottenham. The 26-year-old has developed into one of the best full-backs in the country under Mauricio Pochettino, and was rewarded with a new five-year contract last autumn.

The attacking drive provided by Rose and right-back Kyle Walker has been a huge part of Tottenham’s success this season.

A sidelined Rose would deprive Tottenham of two key defenders, at a vital time of the season.

Jan Vertonghen is working his way back to full fitness following the ankle injury he suffered in last month’s 4-0 win over West Brom.
