Hugo Lloris is convinced that Tottenham players will not be suffering from a “hangover” at the start of this season despite the disappointment they suffered at club and international level.

After slipping behind local rivals Arsenal and into third on the final day of last season, when they had looked like potential title winners for much of the campaign, several of Tottenham’s stars endured disappointing summers on the international stage.

Spurs’ English quintet were, with the exception of Eric Dier, largely disappointing at Euro 2016 as Roy Hodgson’s side were eliminated in the round of 16 for Iceland. Lloris endured even greater disappointment, captaining hosts France to the final of the tournament only to lose in extra time to Portugal.

However the Spurs captain insists that he and his team-mates have put their disappointment to the back of their minds as they prepare to battle for domestic and European glory in the months ahead.

“There will be no hangover,” Lloris told the Sun. “We had a long hard season and though the way it ended was disappointing, we did more than people expected us to.

“We fought for the title and qualified for the Champions League — so that is one big step forward.

“We know we must continue to work hard in training and take what we do in those into games. We are looking to build confidence from our performances right away.

“The key is always to be as consistent as possible. But what happened last season will not affect us.”

Mauricio Pochettino has invested in two major new signings in a bid to ensure his squad is up for the rigours of Champions League football, bringing in Victor Wanyama from former club Southampton and signing Dutch striker Vincent Janssen to back up Harry Kane.

However the club’s preparations for the new season were thrown into disarray yesterday when head of recruitment Paul Mitchell resigned, though he will remain in place under the transfer window has closed.
