Massimo Busacca, the Swiss official who infuriated Arsenal last season by sending off Robin van Persie against Barcelona, has been appointed as FIFA's head of referees.

Busacca, 42, has refereed at two World Cups and took charge of the 2009 Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger clashed with Busacca after the Gunners' defeat in the Nou Camp in March, and was banned for one match by UEFA as a result.

Busacca had sent off Van Persie for taking a shot seconds after the referee had blown the whistle for offside - the striker afterwards called him "a total joke".

The former referee will join the ranks of world football's governing body on August 1, and FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "Massimo Busacca's experience will prove to be particularly useful to our mission and to our efforts to continue the groundwork we have put in place with the confederations and member associations in this particularly important area.

"I am very happy that he has joined us."
