Steven Gerrard returned to Liverpool for the first time since leaving the club in the summer after training with the team on Monday.

The Reds legend left his boyhood side at the end of last season after signing an 18-month deal with MLS club LA Galaxy, although Gerrard later admitted he would have stayed at Liverpool had he been given the chance to take on a coaching role under then-manager Brendan Rodgers.

With the northern Irishman now gone, however, new Reds boss Jurgen Klopp welcomed the 35-year-old back to the club with Gerrard returning to Melwood, Liverpool's training ground, to train with the first-team.

The former England international - who will continue training with the Liverpool squad during the MLS off-season - was seen undergoing a series of exercises and drills and then playing a game with the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Leiva - under the watchful eye of Klopp.

Gerrard admitted recently one of the things he was looking forward to the most when he came back to England was working with the German coach.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: "I'm very excited to go in, obviously I've been there for a very long time and I've come out for a short period but I'm looking forward going into the new set-up to having a look at what Klopp's all about tactically, what he demands of his players and how much he's changed since the Brendan era.

"You just watch him in those interviews and you just love watching him. He's got that infectious personality and I'm excited to go and spend some time with him."

Klopp also revealed recently he may offer the midfielder a route back to the club with a potential coaching role once he retires.

"Of course our doors are always open for him, that is clear," he said. "Stevie has a contract with LA Galaxy, he loves this club and he is a legend and when his contract has ended we can talk about different stuff.

"He’s a Liverpool legend, of course, but his contract as I know is in the USA.

"But now his break starts and I told him: ‘When you are here, of course you can come whenever you want, you can train with us if you think it is good for you.’"
