Ross Barkley has backed out of joining Chelsea for £35million and wants to 'reconsider his position' in the January transfer window, according to Everton's majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

Barkley has been linked with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham on transfer deadline day, and was on the verge of joining the Premier League champions.

However, the England international has now decided not to join Antonio Conte's side, with Everton chief Moshiri telling Sky Sports that the 23-year-old is now considering his options after turning down a move despite undergoing a medical at the Blues' training ground.

When asked about how events unfolded, Moshiri said: "The two clubs agreed a deal of £35m, I think personal terms were agreed.

"After [the] medical, we heard from Paul Martin, Ross Barkley's agent, that he changed his mind and he wanted to reconsider his position during the January transfer window. That is the latest we have been advised."

Barkley has refused to sign a contract extension at Everton with just one year remaining on his current deal, but is now set to stay at Goodison Park until at least January.

Moshiri admitted his shock over the deal collapsing, adding: "He's currently injured so I think yes, technically he will be with us because he's under contract for another year, so it is a big surprise, but that is football."
