Romelu Lukaku follows Manchester United on Twitter and posts farewell to Everton fans as Chelsea bid fails

Romelu Lukaku has followed Manchester United on Twitter and posted a farewell message to Everton fans as his move to Old Trafford edges closer.

Jose Mourinho is set to beat former club Chelsea to the £75million signing of Lukaku in the transfer saga of the summer so far.

The Blues identified Lukaku as their top target and have been speaking to the striker for several weeks about a return to Stamford Bridge, but failed to agree a fee with Everton until their offer to match United's price came too late.

Lukaku has now undergone his Manchester United medical in LA and is expected to be unveiled as their latest signing imminently.

In a series of images posted to his Instagram, the 24-year-old is shown completing his medical and signing a young fan's United shirt.

And now the striker, who scored 25 Premier League goals last term, has followed United on Twitter. Everton, who he joined on loan from Chelsea in 2013 before making the move permanent 12 months later, was the last Premier League club he followed on the social media site.

The Belgium international later took to Instagram to thank Everton fans for their support during his four seasons at Goodison Park.

"To the staff at the the stadium and trainingground thank you for making me feel home from the first day i walked in. To my teammates it was great to play with you guys. To technical staff thank you for helping me become a better player.
