Robert Green should be in the mix for World Cup, says QPR boss Harry Redknapp

Harry Redknapp today pushed Rob Green’s claims for a place in England’s World Cup squad and suggested Julio Cesar will leave Queens Park Rangers in the winter to keep alive his own dream of playing in the finals in his Brazil homeland.

Green has won 12 caps but has not been called up by Roy Hodgson since being part of the squad at Euro 2012.

However, Redknapp believes if England qualify for Brazil then Green deserves to be one of the back-up goalkeepers to Joe Hart.

“Rob has been fantastic for us,” said the QPR boss. “After Joe, he’s in a pool of five or six goalkeepers who will have one eye on the World Cup. I like people who have opinions and Rob is one of those. He’s a top, top goalkeeper.”

Green has been preferred to Brazil international Cesar, who was expected to leave in the summer following relegation.

Redknapp added: “Julio is a great professional and fantastic person. I’m sure a top club could come in for him in January — he should be playing at the top level.”
