Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has emerged as a fitness concern for Arsenal's key clash against Manchester City after withdrawing from international duty.

The Gunners captain sustained a sprained ankle during Sunday's 2-1 Premier League victory against Sheffield United.

Despite being called up by his country to face Benin in an international friendly, Aubameyang has pulled out of the squad for the game.

The 31-year-old will no longer travel with his team-mates to Lisbon for the fixture on October 11 as he recovers from the injury.

It means Aubameyang now faces an anxious wait to see if he will be fit in time for the trip to Man City at the Etihad Stadium on October 17.

The forward's injury was confirmed by Gabon national team coach Patrice Neveu, who revealed Aubameyang would be out of action for the rest of the week.

“Aubameyang suffers from a small sprained ankle, contracted on Sunday, during the Premier League match against Sheffield," Neveu was quoted as telling Radio France Internationale.

"The Arsenal doctor sent me a certificate indicating his unavailability. He is in care for a week."

Aubameyang, who scored 23 league goals last season, has started all four of Arsenal's top-flight games in the current campaign, scoring once and registering an assist.
