Over 1,500 people have signed a petition to have Wayne Shaw reinstated after the 46-year-old acrimonious departure from Sutton United on Tuesday.

Shaw is the subject of investigations from the Gambling Commission and the Football Association after being filmed eating a pasty on the sidelines during his side’s 2-0 defeat to their Premier League side at Gander Green Lane.

Shaw maintains he did not place a bet with Sun Bets, the bookmaker that also sponsored Sutton United’s shirts during the tie.

But amid mixed reactions from the footballing world, a Change.org petition has since been launched by Guido Fawkes to have the Sutton favourite reinstated, receiving over 1,500 signatures to date.

“Justice must prevail and Wayne must be reinstated to the subs' bench,” read a line within the petition’s statement.

Speaking to Sky News on Tuesday the Sutton manager Paul Doswell admitted Shaw’s departure was ‘very disappointing’.

“It’s something that we’ve dealt with quickly as a club,” said Doswell. “Wayne himself has offered his resignation to the club this afternoon and that has been accepted.

“It’s a very sad end to what was a very good story. He's made his position pretty much untenable. If I had been party to the decision I would have advised him very differently but he chose not to speak to the chairman or myself.”
