Peter Crouch can get us off to a flying start, says Corluka

Peter Crouch: will start against Werder Bremen
11 April 2012

Vedren Corluka has backed Peter Crouch to help fill the void left by Jermain Defoe and fire Spurs to Champions League success against Werder Bremen tonight.

Harry Redknapp will reshuffle his team at the Weserstadion after Defoe was sidelined for three months following surgery on torn ankle ligaments.

The Spurs boss is expected to adopt a 4-5-1 formation against the Bundesliga side and is thought to prefer Crouch as a lone striker after his impressive display in the role in the win at Stoke.

Crouch has scored in only one of his five matches this season but Corluka said: "I am very confident about Peter playing because last time he played in the Champions League he scored three goals against Young Boys. It depends how we play but if he plays up on his own then he can do it."

Spurs return to Europe's premier competition for the first time in 48 years since Bill Nicholson's side reached the semi-finals in 1962.

By comparison, Bremen have considerable experience at this level having played in the group stage in five of the past six years and Corluka urged his team-mates to prove they can compete with the best.

"It is a great feeling to play in the Champions League," added the defender. "It is where every player wants to be."
