Pep Guardiola has been charged by Uefa for confronting referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz during Manchester City's Champions League defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Guardiola was sent off at half-time of City's 2-1 quarter-final second-leg loss to Liverpool after he ran onto the pitch and reacted angrily to Lahoz's decision to chalk off Leroy Sane's goal for offside.

Guardiola subsequently spent the second half of the match watching on from the stands, and European football's governing body has now announced that the Spaniard has been charged with two separate offences following his dismissal.

The first is for his angry reaction to Lahoz over Sane's disallowed goal while the second is for communicating with his coaching staff from the stands, which isn't allowed under Uefa rules.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have also been charged with the setting off of fireworks during the game, which saw them advance to the Champions League semi-finals with a 5-1 aggregate score, and the throwing of objects.

Uefa will deal with the charges against Guardiola and Liverpool in a disciplinary hearing on 31 May.
