Non-league footballer branded a 'muppet' for failed 'Panenka' penalty

Peerless Pirlo: The Italian cheekily lifts the ball over Joe Hart
Standard Sport7 April 2015

Taking a penalty is football's great test of nerve.

But it takes a particularly brave and confident player to attempt the audacious 'Panenka' style penalty.

Patented by Czech star Antonin Panenka, who delicately chipped the ball in the 1976 European Championships against Germany, the nonchalant shot has been deployed by a host of celebrated talents including Francesco Totti, Zinedine Zidane and Andrea Pirlo, who memorably beat Joe Hart at Euro 2012 with his own version.

And then there is Ash Flynn who was branded a 'muppet' by one groaning fan when he tried - and failed a panenka in AFC Emley's 0-3 defeat to Hemsworth Miners Welfare, in the first division of the Northern Counties East League.
