Chelsea have been warned Jose Mourinho will make the club regret sacking him for a second time in their history.

Mourinho had expected to still be in charge when Chelsea took on Sunderland tomorrow. He took training yesterday morning and was being lined up to do a pre-match press conference today as normal.

But he was left stunned when chairman Bruce Buck and director Eugene Tenenbaum arrived at the training ground in the afternoon to tell him his services were no longer required, despite having three-and-a-half years left on his contract.

Mourinho bounced back from losing his post at Stamford Bridge in 2007, by winning the treble, including the Champions League, with Inter Milan three years later.

The 52-year-old is going to be flooded with offers from clubs all over Europe, with a return to Real Madrid and Inter Milan a possibility, while Paris Saint Germain and Valencia are also keen.

His agent Jorge Mendes believes Chelsea have made a big mistake and said: "Mourinho does not stop being who he is and he is still the best coach in the world despite leaving Chelsea.

"When Mourinho left Chelsea the first time, he accepted a tremendous challenge and did what no-one in the football world believed he could do and that was to take on Inter and lead them to win the Champions League, Serie A and Coppa Italia, a truly remarkable achievement.

"Then he went to Real Madrid and inspired an historic achievement of the Spanish league, beating all possible records against a great Barcelona, and also the Copa del Rey.

"Today, Mourinho is still the man who coached the English champions and even so, he does not need someone to defend him because, I repeat, he has an amazing career that undoubtedly speaks for him."

Chelsea axed Mourinho with the club only one point above the relegation zone and are expected to confirm the appointment of caretaker Guus Hiddink, who is already in London, today.

As Standard Sport first revealed in October, owner Roman Abramovich wants to appoint Pep Guardiola or Diego Simeone as the new permanent coach next summer.

But it is understood Guardiola feels that the club need 10 new players to turn Chelsea into a force again and is set to leave Bayern Munich for Manchester City instead.

Simeone is a more achievable target, although he will still take some convincing to leave Madrid, where he happily coaches Atletico, for a club that is very unlikely to be in the Champions League next season.

The former Argentina international also speaks little English, although that hasn't put the hierarchy off given his record at Vicente Calderon, where he beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to La Liga in 2014.

Sources suggest Mourinho's relationship with technical director Michael Emenalo had deteriorated and in a damning statement, the latter refused to name the Chelsea coach by name.

Emenalo said: "It was a decision taken to protect the interests of the club. Whilst there is huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter remains that Chelsea Football Club is in trouble.

"The results are not good. There obviously seems to be a palpable discord between manager and players and we felt it was time to act.

"The owner has been forced to make what was a very tough decision for the good of the club. Make no mistake about it: Chelsea Football Club, one of the biggest in the world, is one point above relegation in the English Premier League. That's not good enough.

"Anybody or any fan or even those who have any affiliation to the club can understand that this club is in trouble and something needed to be done."
