Maurizio Sarri believes Ross Barkley should be named in the England squad on Thursday for the Uefa Nations League games this month.

Barkley joined Chelsea from Everton for £15m in January, but only made four appearances under former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte last term.

But he has already played nine times under Conte’s successor Sarri this season and shown good form as Chelsea have begun the season unbeaten.

England coach Gareth Southgate names the squad to take on Croatia and Spain tomorrow and Sarri feels his player should be included.

He said: “I think so because he is improving every week. I think he can improve more because he has the potential to improve more and so I think that he can return in the national team.

“Is he playing enough? I think so. He has played more than the last season in two months. He had a very serious injury one year ago.

“I think he can improve from the tactical point of view, from the physical point of view. He is very good from the technical point of view so I think he can become a very good player.”
