Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham are fighting for "bigger things" than finishing above Arsenal this season.

Spurs have been unable to match their rivals' achievements during the modern era and have not recorded a superior league finish to the Gunners since 1995.

Such a record could finally come to an end this season with the Lilywhites currently 14 points ahead of Arsene Wenger's men, who are struggling for form as the finish line approaches.

But Pochettino is adamant catching pacesetters Chelsea is the club's priority, rather than outdoing Arsenal.

Pochettino said: “I think we’re playing and fighting for bigger things and if we look at the bigger picture it’s to try to reduce the gap with Chelsea.

“It’s not important - the gap we have with Arsenal. The most important thing is to do our job, try to win games and try to reduce the gap with Chelsea.”

Spurs need to pick up just 11 points from their remaining seven games to be mathematically assured of a better league position than Arsenal.

But Pochettino's side are determined to keep hanging onto Chelsea's coattails and could cut the Blues' lead at the top of the table to four points with victory over Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Gunners, meanwhile, face missing out on a top-four finish for the first time during Wenger's reign after a shock 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.
