Martin Jol’s fear for injured Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg

Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg may need an operation to cure his shoulder injury.

Stekelenburg, a £4.7million summer signing from Roma, has not played since the opening day of the season and could face a long spell on the sidelines if surgery is required.

Fulham manager Martin Jol said: “He will be out for the next two weeks and then we will make an assessment. If it is not right, it probably needs an operation.

“It is a matter of over-stretching all the time and then he feels a lot of pain, so we have to be very careful.”

David Stockdale, who has ambitions of an England call-up for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, will continue in goal against Cardiff tomorrow.

Jol said: “Whenever he has come in he has done very well. He should not consider himself as a No2. He was playing [on loan] for Hull City last season and should behave as a No1.”

Bryan Ruiz and Aaron Hughes could both return from injury for tomorrow’s clash at Craven Cottage but Ashkan Dejagah remains sidelined.

Midfielder Alex Kacaniklic said: “Cardiff are a good side and have shown that with good results, especially the win against Manchester City. I saw that game and it shows they are decent.”

Fulham are in the bottom three after winning just one of their first five Premier League games but Jol is confident they can rise up the table.

The Dutchman said: “The difference between being successful and not is nothing. If we would have beaten West Brom we would have been in the top half of the table.”
