Anthony Martial has been christened the ‘French Ronaldo’ by his Manchester United teammates after his superb solo goal against Fulham.

Picking up the ball in his own half, Martial surged towards the Fulham goal, riding Denis Odoi’s challenge as he reached the edge of the box before coolly slotting past Sergio Rico.

The goal was reminiscent of one scored by Cristiano Ronaldo at the same ground in February 2007, one of 23 the Portuguese scored as United clinched the Premier League title that season.

While Martial has some work to do in matching those numbers, he has already earned a new nickname from teammate Juan Mata.

And his manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for a goal and a performance that helped United climb back into the top four for the first time this season.

“I didn’t think about [the comparable Ronaldo goal in 2007] but Anthony in free flow is a great sight,” Solskjaer said.

“His balance is fantastic, he is very strong, he shrugs defenders off and he is quick. He is a very, very good finisher and I think that goal won us the game. I think we were in complete control after that.”
