Manchester United's Phil Jones facing World Cup heartbreak

Agony: Phil Jones holds his shoulder after sustaining an injury

Phil Jones' World Cup dreams may well have been wrecked by a shoulder injury he sustained in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Hull.

Jones clattered into Hull defender Maynor Figueroa while jumping for a corner in the 16th minute of the victory at Old Trafford, which came courtesy of a brace from debutant James Wilson and a strike from Robin van Persie.

Jones walked off the field and down the tunnel before being taken immediately to hospital.

England's World Cup squad is named on Monday, but United interim manager Ryan Giggs admits the defender could miss out.

"He has gone to hospital. We'll just have to assess it, but it didn't look great," Giggs said.

"Straight away he knew he had done something.

"He wanted to come straight off. Usually, as a player, you know it's something bad when you do that.

"Hopefully it's not too bad."

Giggs came off the bench to play for the first time since his appointment as caretaker boss.

The Welshman, who almost scored a stunning free-kick in injury time, said he had not decided whether his 963rd appearance was his last.

The 40-year-old also said he was in the dark regarding the announcement of Louis van Gaal, who is expected to become the new manager at Old Trafford soon.

Giggs said: "I have not spoken to (executive vice-chairman) Ed (Woodward) for the last couple of days so nothing has changed since Saturday.

"It could be the next few days, it could be the next couple of weeks."

Wilson's achievements, and an emotional Old Trafford goodbye from departing captain Nemanja Vidic, were overshadowed somewhat by an alleged stamp on Adnan Januzaj by Hull's David Meyler.

Meyler sank his studs into Januzaj's shin as he lay on the floor in the dying minutes.

Giggs was annoyed that Januzaj was apparently stamped on for the second time this season - Fulham defender Sascha Riether did the same to the young Belgian in November - and called for greater protection for the midfielder, who won the man of the match award.

"It's a joke," he said.

"I didn't see the incident, but I have seen his leg.

"It is the second time it has happened to him this season and it's not great to see. It's terrible, his leg.

"He needs protecting, he is a brilliant player, he is exciting and the authorities need to stamp down on it, whether what can happen now but it was bad.

"I have not seen the stamp but I have seen his leg and it is bad.

"It runs from his knee to his ankle."

Referee Craig Pawson did not see the incident, so Meyler could be punished retrospectively by the Football Association.

The FA did so with Riether, banning him for three matches. If it decided to hand down the same punishment to Meyler, the Republic of Ireland international would miss Hull's FA Cup final against Arsenal a week on Saturday.

Hull manager Steve Bruce said: "I didn't see it.

"I can't really comment because I haven't seen anything."
